Review of Demon of Mine by Ranae Rose

Demon of Mine by Ranae Rose
Review by Gabryyl Pierce
4 1/2 of 5 stars
Twelve year-old Elsie was the only survivor of the fire that destroyed her home and killed her family. Taken in by the Remingtons and trained as a housemaid, Elsie spends the next seven years pining for Damon, heir to the Remington textile empire.
Damon Remington, one of London's most notorious bachelors, is accused of murder.  Elsie’s testimony could save him...if she can bring herself to confess to Damon and the world that she was hidden in his bedroom on the night of the crime. And why.
A strange illness has overcome Elsie. All hopes of a future with anyone, least of all Damon, are dashed by a dire prognosis with no cure.
But Damon has secrets of his own, preternatural secrets that can save Elsie’s life -- at a price.
Demon of Mine is billed as an erotic Regency vampire romance but it’s more than that. While the sex is steamy, it’s the characters and their intimacy that drives the story. The historical details are accurate and draw you in to the time. This is book one of a series I look forward to reading more of.

Review of Chocolate-Covered Eyes by Lori R. Lopez

Review by Gabryyl Pierce

3 of 5 stars

Chocolate-Covered Eyes: A Sampler of Horror is a collection of poetry and short stories by Lori R. Lopez. Each story has been rated individually below and averaged for an overall rating:

Chocolate-Covered Eyes  1 of 5 stars
An attempt at horror poetry that fell flat for me.

Heartbeat   4 of 5 stars
A fun zombie story from a young boy’s perspective. Good characters and tight plotting make this a good addition to the zombie sub-genre.

Nuance  2 of 5 stars
Another short story but one I could not get into. This one had the guts of a good story strangled by dozens ten-dollar words.

Unleashed: Tail One  5 of 5 stars
Absolutely my favorite and worth the read. The point of view switches between the family dog, a devilish cat and a detective, with wondrous results. I’d love to see more of this!

Beyond The Stump  2 of 5 stars
The story of a tree and its part in the narrator’s life. Again, an interesting premise buried under tons of unnecessary “literary” prose.

Bedeviled  4 of 5 stars
A good story and fast read. My second favorite in the collection. Warning: contains insects! *shudder*

Macabre  2 of 5 stars
An okay entry, a bit over-long. The central character never grabbed my attention.

All in all, the author’s attempts at literary prose are overstuffed and unnecessary – Lopez has a good voice, when she lets it breathe, but Chocolate-Covered Eyes does contain a few stories worth the read.

REINCARNATED GHOSTS: A Guest Post by Sarah Kernochan

When I was 27 I didn’t believe in life after death. The proof just wasn’t there for me. In that same year I visited a psychic for the first time. He started off the first Tarot spread with the remark: “Wow. You’re going to win a really big award. Is it an Oscar?”  I replied, “Actually, I just did.” This made me suspicious of him right off the bat. It’s not like he couldn’t have a done a little research on my name and found that out easily – and here he was pretending to be psychic, and here I was spending a lot of money on a fool’s errand.

Then he looked puzzled, tapping the card (Ace of Wands) and saying, “But this is in the future. Well, maybe you’ll win another one.” Thirty years later, I called him to say he was right and I did win a second. Dang, he was good!

But that wasn’t why I was I came to him in the first place. I had a problem. I was temporarily homeless, spending nights in an upstairs guest room at my parents’. I’d never used this room before, but after I went to college my old bedroom had been taken over by my dad as a study. I didn’t sleep well from the beginning in this unfamiliar room. I would start to fall asleep, and then strange things would happen: sounds like something rolling across a wood floor (the room was completely carpeted) or once I had the sensation my head was in someone’s lap who was stroking my head. Another time, I felt my toes being yanked sharply, as if someone was impatiently demanding my attention. I was frightened, and didn’t know where to turn for help. A friend suggested I see this psychic.

Towards the end of the reading, and without my prompting, he mentioned there was a spirit around me. “It’s male, and you knew him. Don’t worry,” the psychic said, “he’s protective.”

I returned to the guest room without fear, and was able to identify, from clues in the room, exactly who my ghost was. Thus began a relationship between a family phantom and myself, which endured for many years. But that’s another story.

Once you have encountered a ghost in a believable way, you are forced to accept that there is indeed an afterlife. The spiritual realm now yawns before you: if I’m going to believe that, then what else is true? After a time I began to consider reincarnation, and came to believe in that as well. It was in that belief that I embarked on my novel Jane Was Here.

My title character retains a very vague feeling of not being where she’s supposed to be since the day she was born. This is not my home, these are not my parents, this is not my name. My real name is Jane and I belong somewhere else. When she reaches 22, she receives a clue that sends her on a long journey to the place she feels to be her true home. She arrives in a small Massachusetts town and is immediately drawn to a particular house. Later in the story she discovers that there was a young woman named Jane who lived in this same house, and who disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1853. She decides that she is the reincarnation of the earlier Jane. What she doesn’t know yet is that Jane’s killer has also reincarnated, and is living here, right now, in this town.

In a way, Jane is a walking ghost, haunting the people who were responsible for her disappearance and leading them to their karmic fate.

Thus Jane joins the list of ghosts I have known, and known well.

For more of my thoughts on reincarnation, please visit my blog

Blurb:
A mysterious young woman calling herself Jane turns up in a small New England town. She claims a fragmentary memory of growing up in this place, yet she has never been here before in her life. Upon her arrival, strange and alarming things begin happening to some of the town's inhabitants. As Jane's memories reawaken piece by piece, they carry her back to a long-buried secret, while the townspeople hurtle forward to a horrific event when past and present fatally collide.

Reviews:

"My friend Sarah Kernochan's delicious novel "Jane Was Here"--it has all the glamour parts, the fast moving story, the wild lovely characters, the gullible kids, but it's really about the power of the past to shape the present." - Susan Cheever

“…nothing short of magic.” – Jacquelyn Mitchard

“A perfect choice for book clubs.” - Brunonia Barry

PYN Review of Werewolf Descent

The Last Witch Series: Werewolf Descent by Elizabeth Kolodzeij
Review written by Morgan Wylie
Blurb from the book:
Last witch in the world, Faith Scott, and her Irish vampire boyfriend Trent have just come back from fighting for their lives to recover the Vampiric Blood gem and Werewolf Moon gem. Thinking they could finally relax and work on the romance growing between them, they now meet a mysterious psychic vampire named Vincent who has his heart set on being with Faith.
Soon bizarre killings of Zou Tai’s werewolf pack begin, with rumors of an alchemist possessing the famed philosophers stone being the assailant; which, causes Faith to turn to Vincent for help in figuring out why the werewolves are being murdered.
It isn’t long before all those around them test Trent and Faith’s love, along with their abilities, once again. It is all Trent can do to keep Faith safe by his side while both go up against a deadly alchemist, deceptive gods, and having to rescue the werewolf prince; yet, after a deal with the God of Werewolves will Trent be able to save himself too?
~~~~~
Werewolf Descent is the second novel in The Last Witch Series. It’s a paranormal with some romance that is sure to curl your toes. Then again, how could it not when a sexy, overprotective Irish vampire is involved? Enter Trent. He is everything you want in a vampire boyfriend, especially when it comes to newbie witch, Faith- the last witch in the world.
After the intense conclusion to Vampyre Kisses, the first in this series, Faith is trying to recover and just beginning to get a handle on everything new in her life when new chaos begins to unfold. Enter Vincent. A psychic vampire that adds a new level of craziness to Faith’s already complicated life, in more ways than one. He feeds off the life energies of others and can’t seem to work his magic around Faith without draining her as well. Unsure if he can be trusted, Faith sets out on a journey for information that only Vincent can help her with, until a great deception is revealed along with a multitude of emotion.
There is a lot going on in this novel and I had some trouble following along as the point of views change. It’s a great story with a lot of potential; and the tragedy of this conclusion keeps you on your toes as what could transpire in the next book. There are some great characters and I love Oran, the cat and Faith’s familiar; their connection is great. I give this novel 4 out of 5 fangs.
PYN Review of Seared by Desire by Jennifer Alli
Seared by Desire by Jennifer Alli
Review written by Morgan Wylie
Blurb from the book:
A cold heart…
For centuries Lucian has battled on two fronts. Defeating the Malachites, all that stand between him and becoming King of the vampires and the demon within himself, battling desperately for release. His attention stretched thin he has no time for women but Sara, his fiery bride won’t be denied.
A burning touch…
With a deadly curse hanging over her head, Sara knows her time is short. Placing her life in Lucian's hands is a risk she knows she must take and one her innocent heart gladly makes for Lucian makes her body burn and her soul fly.
Never had hot and cold reacted so combustively.
Sara’s presence pushes Lucian to the brink of madness, her nearness making him crazed with the need for her blood. Though his fangs ache with longing, to bite her could condemn them both but the attraction between them is too strong to be denied. As they race headlong towards a fiery conclusion will they emerge unscathed to will the flames of desire consume them both?
~~~~~
Seared by Desire is a deadly combination of the age old Vampire with a twist of fire- an elemental. A fire elemental named Sara. She comes from a village of other fire elementals constantly striving for more power at any cost. However, Sara is shunned as an outcast within the walls to which she is forced to remain until something erupts within her changing her forever. Her people quickly change their view of her seeing her now as a weapon even at the greatest cost, but Sara just wants to live.
Lucian, Lord of the vampires, seeks peace for his people in the midst of war while he fights to regain his internal control when a fiery redhead tempts him like none other.
I love Lucian! He’s a well written character. He’s a strong but good man, a fierce warrior, a great leader, and an excellent lover with a bit of a bite... if you know what I mean *wink wink*. Love scenes with a vampire... STEAMY!  Sara is an excellent character as well. She is strong even when she is weak and the two of them make an incredible team! I love the way her powers are written; something I would love to see on a big screen.
This story is a great read, I didn’t want to put it down. It’s got a great cast of characters and some I could see hopefully making more appearances in future additions. I’m putting this author on my watch list.
4/5 Fangs from me!

Interview with Jennifer Alli, Author of Seared by Desire

Hey Everyone. Welcome to our interview with Jennifer Alli, author of Seared by Desire. Our vampire lovers are sure to sink their fangs into this paranromal romance. Jennfier is also giving away three copies of her eBook to some lucky winners, so don't forget to leave an email after the interview so you can get entered into the contest. Now...for the interview:

What inspired the storyline to Seared by Desire?

Would you believe me if I said it was a horse? Not that I’ve ever ridden a horse in my life and I’ve only ever seen one up close once. Let me explain. I was coming to the end of my Love Bites trilogy and I just wondered how people delivered mail in the time before cars. It got me thinking about how far people would have to go to achieve things that we take for granted and I just thought of how hard it would be for two people to communicate if they had to ride horses instead of just picking up a phone. Then the idea came to me to write a book that wasn’t about werewolves, I wanted to switch it up and so the elementals came to me. I had the setting in terms of time, an idea for what paranormal element I wanted my characters to have and by then Sara had made herself known and Lucian followed very swiftly after. It’s near impossible to keep those two apart. J

Tell us a little more about your characters.
Well firstly we have our heroine, Sara who is a little bit of a contradiction. She’s an expert sword smith but she hates violence…I know it doesn’t seem like that makes sense but she’s a creature of necessity. She creates swords because there’s reliability in steel but after years of being an outcast and picked on for being weak she knows that not everything can be achieved through force. But when the chips are down she’s prepared to do anything to protect those close to her.
Then we have Lucian…What can I say about Lucian…he’s completely different to Sara. While she’s laid back and relaxed he’s intense and focused on completing his mission. He’s so focused on defeating his enemies once and for all that the first time he meets Sara he leaves her unconscious in the middle of a road so that he doesn’t have to deal with the problems a bride will bring. Now I’m making him sound like an arse…to be brutally honest he is at times but he does have a softer side, Sara just needs to work on bringing it out. He’s spent centuries alone and at war so it does take a little effort on her part especially seeing as he’s adamant no one, including Sara, finds out that she’s his bride.

How do you pick names for your characters?
I always pick my character names so that they have a meaning that I think relates to some aspect of their personality and works with the story. For example, Sara, despite being the lowest of the low in the fire elemental community actually means princess and Lucian means light. In Seared by Desire, Lucian and Sara become known as the King and Queen of light. I won’t tell you why, I’ll leave it as a surprise.
One name always comes to me first and then I spend ages trying to think of a name for the other lead. In Seared by Desire, Sara came first and then Lucian followed…after about 3 weeks of me pulling my hair out. You can’t write about [insert name here] forever after all.

Why did you choose to write about vampires?
In this case I didn’t choose to write about vampires, it’s just that they were the only ones that I could think of that would be able to fulfill the conditions to break Sara’s curse. It was interesting writing about them though, I made things up as I went along to create a type of vampire I’d like. That’s the amazing thing about writing paranormal romance you can literally create a world of your own with your rules and no one can really contradict you.

Do you write about other supernatural beings or creatures?
Yes I do. The bulk of my published works are actually about werewolves. I wrote a trilogy called Love Bites focusing on three wolves and how they found their mates and eventually, with many screw ups along the way, managed to fall in love. At the moment all my energy is focused on my elementals though. They’re great fun to write and I can bring in other supernatural creatures as and when I please.

Did you choose the paranormal genre or did it choose you?
I think it was a bit of both really. I started out reading fantasy and then progressed into paranormal romance. I started out with Sherrilyn Kenyon and by then moved on to Christine Feehan and by the time I got round to Kresley Cole I was hooked, a paranormal romance addict. There was so much potential in the genre that it was impossible for me not to write in it. I love the paranormal elements where anything is possible and I love the romance element too where love can literally move mountains if necessary.

What’s your writing schedule like?
A schedule? Am I meant to have one of those? Just kidding…sort of. I write when and wherever I can grab the time. There’s always so much to do. If an idea grabs me I have to write it down otherwise I’ll forget. I knew it was bad when I started writing on the backs of receipts because I’d left my notebooks at home. J Honestly, there are days where I get nothing done and then there are days where the words just flow. No schedule just me trying to fit everything in to days where I don’t have any time.

How many books have you published?
Including Seared by Desire I have 5 books published but Whirlwind of Pleasure should be out for the end of the summer bringing that number up to six.

What other projects are you working on?
I’m writing frantically to get Whirlwind of Pleasure completed this summer. I’m just going through the final edits at the moment. It’ll be the third in the Elemental Passions series and is going to focus on Gwen and Nicholas, an air elemental cursed to have disaster follow her everywhere she goes and a lycan determined to have his mate consequences be damned.

Is Seared by Desire part of a series or a stand-alone?
Seared by Desire is the first book in the Elemental Passions quartet.  It’s followed by Rocked by Passion, Whirlwind of Pleasure and the WIP Submerged in Ecstasy.

Tell us one random fact about yourself.
I am a die-hard chocoholic. If you need to know anything about chocolate and baking I’m the woman for the job, (~_^)

Where can readers purchase your book?
You can find Seared by Desire on amazon, smashwords and if you’re looking for a paperback then it’s also available on blurb.

Where can readers connect with you on the web?
I’m really big on talking to readers and interacting with people who read my books so I’m all over the internet.
I’m on: Facebook, twitter, goodreads and I have a blog too!
Can you share an excerpt from Seared by Desire?
Of course.
He was intrigued. Fire elementals never called for help.
He moved closer, examining the freckles that covered her cheeks, her plump red lips and the curve of her nose. She fell to her knees and the smell of her blood exploded into the air. He was close now, so close he could feel her heat and the smell of her blood hit him like a drug. Rich. Exotic. His.
The warm blood running through his veins froze. He stepped back as though he’d been punched in the gut; he felt as though he had been. The woman in front of him was his bride, the woman fate had put aside solely for him. In all the centuries he’d been alive he’d never expected to find her but here she was, presented to him like a gift. His fangs ached. He took another step back despite the fact he wanted to get closer to her.
He had just fed but he wanted nothing more than to sink his fangs into her soft skin, drink her until she was boneless then take her body until she couldn’t move. Or both at the same time. The thought appealed to him while at the same time scaring him beyond all reason. To drink his bride’s blood would be to tie his strength to her. No other’s blood would invigorate him like hers; he would be at his most powerful while being at his most vulnerable. She would give him power like no other but the blood of everyone else would leave his stomach full but his body weak. She was a liability he couldn’t afford to have right now. He was in the middle of a war. He hadn’t even realised he’d moved to her side.
Her hand gripped his tightly forcing him to stare into her burning blue eyes. “You have to run. Please. You have to run, I can’t control her. Everything will burn. Warn everyone on your way out. Run.” Her soft voice was desperate, her words slurring as she suddenly lost consciousness.
Lucian looked down at their joined hands; her tanned skin was hot against his, her warmth seeping into him, heating his blood. His body was stirring to life at the sight of her, the smell of her, the feel of her. He knew in that instant that she would drive him to distraction and distraction was the one thing he couldn’t afford, not now, not when the end was so close. He pulled his hand loose and she slid boneless to the ground. Squashing down any traces of sympathy he felt towards his unconscious bride, he took a step back.
“My Lord?” The voice was quiet, hesitant as he asked the question.
Spinning round to stare at Russell, Lucian snapped, “What?”
“You have fed?”
“Yes,” he responded abruptly.
“Then should we move on? The Malachites?”
Dark eyes turned to glance at the woman laying prone against the ground, an urge to help her rising within him. She’s a fire elemental. She’ll be fine. She’ll survive until my war is over and then…then I’ll come for her. The words meant to reassure him did little to that effect. “Fine, I’ll deal with the Malachites but I want you to stay here.”
“Why my Lord? Don’t you want me to help you?”
“What I want is for you to stay and watch over this woman until she wakes. No one is to harm her or disturb her rest.” His eyes flickered to the fangs protruding from Russell's mouth and a beast rose within him, determined to tear the man’s head from his shoulders. “And no one is to drink her either. She is to remain exactly as she is now. Completely untouched.”
“And if she doesn’t wake until after the sun rises?”
Then burn but watch over her. He shook his head to repel the thought. “Summon some of our humans and have them watch her in your stead but I don’t want her to see you. As soon as you’re sure she’s awake, come back.”
“Yes my Lord.”
Though it pained him, Lucian turned away from his unconscious bride, wiping her blood off his hand and onto his coat all the while resisting the urge to bring the cool skin to his mouth and lick it clean. And people wonder why I wear so much black, he scoffed. The blood doesn’t show. Although, if there were anyone whose blood I would wish to be covered in, it’s hers. I have more important things to deal with than a woman, even if she is mine. He forced his mind away from his bride’s delicious blood, leaping into the air and disappearing into the night. There was a war going on and one woman wasn’t going to change that.

Interview and Giveaway with Belinda Boring

We are so excited to talk today with one of our favorite book reviewers turned author, the wonderful Belinda Boring, AKA Bookish Snob. She has a fangtabulous novella out, Without Mercy and she is going to be giving away a copy of it. Want to win it? Just leave us a comment below and you will be entered! Ready to learn about Belinda and her new book?

Tell us a little about your Without Mercy:
Without Mercy shares a story about Darcy, a female werewolf, and what happens when a simple errand takes a deadly twist, turning her from cautious prey to dangerous predator? Here’s a little bit of the blurb:

When Darcy’s outing takes a turn for the worst and tests her to the point of breaking, she struggles to maintain her humanity. Where loyalty and pack mean everything, she surrenders to the inevitable and only an act of complete trust can touch her. When all is said and done, with memories flooding her mind, Darcy holds tightly to the only thing that makes sense – it was all a dream. Or was it?

What inspired you to start writing?
In general, it was someone I trusted who asked me one day, “Belinda, have you ever thought about writing?” I laughed, told them I never would and here I am two years later published! LOL

For Without Mercy, I woke up from a nightmare with this gut wrenching feeling of grief that was so overwhelming, I couldn’t shake it. My BFF encouraged me to write the scene out and I did, posting it on my author blog. People really enjoyed and asked if there was more so I sat down one Saturday and finished it.

Is there a full-length novel in the works?
There is but not for the Mystic Wolves novelette series. I’m actually in the process of finishing another urban fantasy story called Broken Promises. It’s book one in the Brianna Lane series, and shares how Bree must not only fight for the man she loves, but also to save the world from a Fae invasion. In one crazy moment, everything in her life turns upside down and it takes one heck of a woman to rise above it. It’s definitely a lot of fun to write and I’m getting good feedback from it. Once I’ve released this, I have other stories to work on J

Will Without Mercy be part of a series?
It is! I actually got the idea from my BFF, Lacey on the day I released Without Mercy. Everyone was so excited about what they were reading, she suggested I continue to write small novelettes and continue the story on. Kind of like a serial that I would release every month or so. I’ve already started on the next installment called Cherished and it spends a lot of time showing the kind of relationship Darcy and Mason have and how they deal with the aftermath of Without Mercy. Lots of swoon! I have all kinds of ideas for future characters and storylines so be on the lookout for a sexy vampire called Devlin.

You’re a book reviewer, so you’ve read plenty of books. What do you think makes a great heroine?
I love the strong and feisty heroine, the one that doesn’t cower in a corner afraid but still has the softness and vulnerability that makes her endearing. She’s the woman that doesn’t take no for an answer and will give everything she has for those she loves. Of course, my favorite part is where she brings the hero to his knees!

If you had to choose a favorite paranormal being, would it be a sexy vampire, a hot alpha wolf, or something entirely different?
Gosh, I hate choosing! I want to say I’m a “fang” girl all the way because there is something so seductive and dangerous about vampires. I’m all about the bite and it gives me the tingles thinking about what it would be like having one set his sights on me. But then in the next breath, having an alpha wolf stalk you, watch you, ready to pounce and ravish you? Its swoon inducing! Especially when that wolf is Mason. Then, after saying all that, I also have a love for angels and demon warlocks. So many that teases and tempts me!

In your opinion, what’s the best part of the paranormal romance genre?
I love that anything is possible and with the danger that comes from dealing with supernatural characters; it really increases the intensity and heat. I love the emotional rollercoaster I find reading the genre, the way I’m able to connect with the women who hold nothing back. It’s all or nothing. And without fail, I love the way the genre makes leaves me sighing in a gooey mess. I rarely read outside paranormal romance and urban fantasy because I don’t get the same rush and high that I do after reading romance. It’s addicting!

How do you keep motivated to write?
I surround myself with supportive people – my husband, friends I’ve met online, fellow authors and my best friend Lacey. Whenever I feel myself lagging, I know I have people I can turn to and they help me stay focused and heading in the right direction. They are all such an invaluable part of my life and I love them!

I’m also an incredibly visual person so it’s not a stretch for me to have music playlists, slideshows of story muses and book covers created while I’m still in the process of writing. Whenever I find it hard to start writing, I’ll put on headphones, crank up the music and stare at photos. Moments later, the story is flowing and I can’t type fast enough. You have to do whatever it takes, right?

What’s your take on the indie book movement?
I think it’s absolutely fabulous! I love being able to have complete creative control of the stories I write – from the storyline to the cover to how I want to promote it. I’m a huge believer in having options and being able to have a variety of directions to choose from. It’s about finding what’s best for you as the author and for your book. When I first decided I wanted to publish, I was terrified not being in a publishing house would hurt my career because where else would I find everything I needed? With the indie book movement taking the book world by storm, an author can find countless resources at their disposal and release something that is just as competitive and comparable. To me, that’s amazing and definitely an avenue I’m going to continue exploring.

Tell us a random fact about yourself:
I’m completely accident prone. I’m just coming off a 5 month stint with a damaged foot and wouldn’t you know it, I’ve almost hurt my other foot already on several occasions. I’ve learned to be extremely careful how I walk and to the amusement of my BFF, she now feels she needs to “escort” me everywhere. She thinks it’s hilarious to text me “walking’ instructions.

If you couldn’t write or read books, what would you do with your time?
It’s almost blasphemous to suggest that! My stomach seriously just sank into my stomach and I had a flash of panic. I don’t know what I’d do. I love what I’m doing within the book world at the moment – writing, blogging, reviewing, promoting – and can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I would hope I’d find something else I was equally as passionate about.

Where can readers purchase your book?
Without Mercy can be bought from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords.

Where can readers connect with you on the web?

Would you mind sharing a small excerpt?

Sure!

The loud click of a gun being cocked stopped me cold. I didn’t need to turn around to see death had finally caught us. I closed my eyes for a brief moment and grimaced.

Seconds. We’d missed freedom by mere moments and with adrenaline coursing through my body, a feeling of defeat crashed over me. To come so close and be stopped was devastating.

I dug deep for courage as my hand was squeezed. Jasmine would be terrified enough without seeing fear in my eyes and if we were going to get out of this, I needed to keep her calm. Or at least calmer than I felt.

Giving her a look I hoped conveyed confidence, I motioned for her to stay quiet as I positioned her behind me and turned to look at our attacker. All night I’d sensed the person breathing down our necks, following closely but always just out of sight. Now I could put a face to our stalker.

I saw the gun, aimed straight at me. The finger poised over the trigger ready to shoot. The hand holding it was steady and trained to adjust to every movement. I shied to the left and back again. Without hesitation, the gun’s motion mimicked mine.

Damn. Judging from the precise motions; whoever was holding the gun knew what they were doing. If they took a shot, they wouldn’t miss and out running a bullet was too risky.

A quick sniff at the air and drawing on my other senses told me I was dealing with a human male and I couldn’t help but grin at the bitter scent of fear mixed in with the sweetness of his excitement. It was intoxicating.

I may be a female but as a werewolf, I held incredible strength. My body began to relax. As long as I paid attention to the gun still pointed at me, and made no crazy moves, our chances of escape had just increased.

I looked beyond the weapon and recognized the determined face that stared back at me. The emotions rolling off his body caused my wolf to raise her head and howl. This wasn’t a pack mate or dominant wolf to play submissive with by showing my throat. Looking at our attacker, I could feel my hackles rise as she growled, desperate to take over.

Series Business: Three Types of Series - A Guest Post by Misty Evans

I love reading books in a series, don’t you? No matter what your favorite genre, you can find a series that grabs you by the imagination and refuses to let go, story after story. The best series are like Calgon…they take you away from the everyday world and give you a free pass to live vicariously through the characters.
As an author, I enjoy writing series as well. When my muse produces a fun character, I want to spend more time watching them get in and out of trouble, and help them on their quests to find true love, save the world, or fight the devil.
I’ve turned my love of reading and writing series into teaching others how to write them too. I thought I’d share info about series from my online workshop with you today.
There are three basic types of series:
Serials: same main character is featured in each book, but each book can stand alone.  Most mystery/suspense and action/adventure series fall into this category. While you learn more about the character as the series progresses, the stories themselves are mostly episodic. A few examples:
Stephanie Plum (Janet Evanovich)
Kay Scarpetta (Patricia Cornwall)
Eve Dallas (Nora Roberts)
Sookie Stackhouse (Charlaine Harris)

Sequels: a finite number of books where the plot is introduced in the first and concludes with the last. Many fantasy and science fiction series fall into this category. Individual books can be read as standalones, but readers get more out of the stories if they begin with the first book and follow the series in order. A few examples:
Harry Potter (J.K. Rowling)
Mortal Instruments (Cassandra Claire)
Twilight (Stephanie Meyer)
Witches Anonymous (Misty Evans)

Spinoffs: a minor character from the original standalone is developed. Spinoffs, or ensemble series, work well for romance writers who need a fresh couple for each book’s romance. A few examples:
Black Dagger Brotherhood (J.R. Ward)
Lords of the Underworld (Gena Showalter)
Dream Hunter Novels (Sherrilyn Kenyon)
Super Agent Series (Misty Evans)

One of my favorite resources is the Los Angeles Public Library’s Index for Series and Sequels: http://www.lapl.org/resources/indexes/sequels.html. Type in an author and get a list of books in their series, including the main characters and special notes about location or other important facts.
Series allow readers (and writers) to get to know fabulous characters and explore their world in detail. There are great series out there, in every genre, and written by many of our favorite authors under pseudonyms. Head to your local library, independent or online bookstore to find a new series. Happy reading!

Misty Evans writes the best-selling Super Agent Series and paranormal Witches Anonymous series. She likes her coffee black, her conspiracy stories juicy, and her wicked characters dressed in couture. To learn more about Misty and her books, visit www.readMistyEvans.com.
